But before even starting the process, it first has to be established why the site is built. This is the first thing that every site should have- a purpose for its creation. If the site is to fulfil a personal fantasy of having a website representing who they are, not many purposes need to be achieved after. Besides personal sites are inexpensive to build, and wont be considered here. Having a clear cut objective of why the site is being built will be a guiding and motivating factor for not only the client, but for the webmaster entrusted with the job.

Another thing every site should have is a niche, a target audience. When you target all visitors on the internet, you are probably going to get none. The most successful websites are those that have isolated a group of internet users and given them priority. Diversifying is not really wise, unless the site is a general one, offering all kinds of content. But if you are selling a product, you need to identify the right target market, study it, and know the best way to interact with it. Having a niche will help the webmaster have an easier job of dealing with one market. They are more likely to create a functional site when they have a certain kind of internet user in mind.

Now that you have established who you are building a site for, what do they stand to gain from your site? Is it free material, information, or free products? When a visitor comes to your site, what expectations will they develop, and how will the expectations be met. A webmaster is more likely to determine the right content for a website, when they know what the end users stand to achieve from regularly visiting the site. After logging off, the site has to leave a satiating effect on the visitor in terms of information gained or a product acquired.

Finally your site should have the potential of making a user a repeat visitor. One of the high achievements of a site is having it bookmarked by a mass audience. That’s a display of intention of visiting again. A webmaster has to take this into serious consideration and make sure that they continuously update the website and add relevant pages, so that the visitor is treated to something new every time they pay the website a visit.

A good site should have all the above. The job of making it that way is given to a webmaster. This implies that the webmaster has to constantly keep in touch with the clients to ascertain that the purpose of the site is continually maintained, as it is being designed, and content is being loaded. This is a prerequisite to making a successful site, because as long as the site achieves its purpose, then it’s always going to attract the targeted visitors, and over time, become a success.

People have websites created for all kinds of reasons.
