They carry out continuous monitoring of the website, ensure that the hardware and software are working properly, update the pages by adding pages, and making any design adjustments that are necessary. In whatever kind of setting, the website administrator will be credited with these responsibilities. There are times when the webmaster does more than their job title allows them to. For instance, they can be involved in intricate design, technical writing, advertising and marketing, and so on. It’s not wrong to have these skills, but there are usually other individuals who are expected to carry out the aforementioned jobs. These are the persons the webmaster works with, in a perfect work environment.

The web designer is one of them. Alternatively known as the web designer, this person interacts repeatedly with the webmaster. They are responsible for designing the site in its creation stages, developing a layout for it, creating accompanying graphics and applications, creating 3D models and CGI scripts. Their task is a dearly important one, especially when it comes to achieving the wishes of a client down to the last detail. They are involved in new page creation, in terms of the layout of the page, and any graphic support it may require. A web designer is more marketable when they know mark-up language, though knowledge in using a WYSIWYG editor is considered sufficient.

There is the web developer, who is more of a programmer than anything. Borrowing from that, a web developer is expected to know C or C++ programming, Perl too, and use of JavaScript, PHP, SSI and other programmes. They also have to know HTML coding, as they will continually use it in scripting. The developer can also write and maintain the CSS of the site. If the task is relatively involving, a web producer can be assigned the job. While a webmaster can deal with the hardware parts of website establishment, an engineer can be present, especially when the server has complexities owing to the size of the website that it supports. A technical writer is another member of the team, and their role is usually content creation. Unless they are limited to working on one site, a technical writer is expected to have literal prowess, and diverse writing skills to be able to create content with any kind of topic whatsoever.

In a bid to increase their marketability, a webmaster has evolved and gained the ability to be able to carry out most of these functions if not all. In corporate settings, where the importance of a website is far too great to rely on the expertise of one person, the structure remains where different individuals retain their specified tasks. In such a case, a webmaster focuses on the most important parts of website management and monitoring, and delegates the other tasks to the other qualified professionals.

While there are many different definitions of a webmaster, the one that seems to draw the greatest unison percentage, is that a webmaster is the person in charge of maintaining a website.
