In all web development projects, the first step is always planning. It is the step that sits all the team players together, so that goals can be set, objectives can be outlined, and possibilities can be created. Every team member gets an assignment, and a deadline which they should stick to. The magnitude of the assignment is dependent on the magnitude of the site to be created. This means that the more important the site is, the more gravity it carries, and therefore, the greater the need to do everything professionally and in time. The planning step is arguably the most interactive one, not because team members get their duties assigned, but because the needs of the client to be served are listed down.

A client needing a site is usually specific about the kinds of needs that they have. They usually have a vision for their website, and a finished picture lies at the back of their heads. This picture needs to be communicated to the website development team, so that it can be brought to life. Every possible specific is divulged into. The client gets to be specific about things such as, the kind of colors to be used in the site, as in its theme, the number of pages, the kind of content to be created, based on the market that they are targeting, the kind of applications to be include, and the kind of graphics desired. Suggestions are made along the ways, to help the client better express the needs they have. References of already established websites can be made, for the mental picture to be clearer, and for the website development team to understand it better.

If the website is of a company, then data needs to be collected, as it will be integrated into the website. These includes things such as employee details, scope of the services, the mission and vision of the company, achievements and milestones made, human resource information and so on. These are usually provided in document form, so integrating them into the website should not be too hard.

There are difficulties encountered in this first interactive step. For instance, there are times when the clients know what they want. This is good- the difficulty arises when what they want, cannot fully be achieved. The kind of color coordination they might desire may not make sense on a website, and the background color they choose may compromise on the readability of the content posted. All these challenges need to be overcome. A client may make drastic changes even after the planning, and these need to be accommodated as well, regardless of the difficulty of doing that. Cost planning is also done in this first step, and a near-accurate estimation of what it might cost to complete the project is calculated. Software and hardware requirements for the project are also considered before the project begins.

Web development is an involving process, and this creates the need to come up with a plan before the start of anything.
